Golytely Bowel Preparation for Colon Surgery

Purpose:

This preparation is designed to allow rapid cleansing of the colon needed for colon surgery.  In order for it to be effective you must rapidly drink the large amount of solution prescribed.  This will not be absorbed through the bowel, therefore, flushing waste material before it.

Instructions:

1)      Fill the prescriptions you were given in the office at your local drug store.

2)      On the day before the scheduled surgery, drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Clear liquids include water, clear fruit juices (apple, grape, cranberry), bullion, plain Jello.  No solid foods, milk or milk products are allowed.

3)      At 4 P.M., begin drinking the Golytely.  Drink this as rapidly as possible.  The rate at which you take the fluid is very important in the preparation.  Try to drink 8 oz every 10-15 minutes.  If you are nauseated or having stomach cramps take a half hour rest and resume drinking at a slower rate.  To make Golytely more palatable, you can chill it cold and add small amounts of lemon or lime concentrate.  You will frequent some loose or watery stools.  Diarrhea may continue for a time after you have finished drinking the fluid, until it is all washed through you.

4)      You should finish all the Golytely by midnight, but hopefully you have finished by 7 or PM already!  Remember not to eat or drink anything after midnight, otherwise you surgery may be cancelled.

5)      Take the Neomycin and Erythromycin pills as directed at 8 PM, 9 PM, and midnight.
